Make Your Freestyles Fire Step 3

STAGE 3 (Go here when you’re confident in your abilities):

FREESTYLE RAP TIP #5: A good battle isn’t luck: Anazlyze, Outline, Diss – QUICK!

The object of freestyling is to come up with the dopest lines off the top of the dome. Look at your opponent, listen to what they say, and rip em apart.

Just use your first instincts. How does your oppenent appear? What angles can you use to attack them at without taking a cheapshot? What lines did they use that contradicted that you can pinpoint? Are they dressed funny? What about their body language? What do you think the responses to your disses will be, and what will you have to comeback?

Just get around 2-4 disses and organize them quickly. Then just fill in with words that flow smooth or rhyme, and you can a solid freestyle.

That is one reason why it is important to use your surroundings as well as have a notebook. You can buy a couple seconds by filling in from your written material or using your surroundings before ripping into them.

Also, it is good to have a main objective in mind, like a certain punch your going for, be it that your defending yourself against a dis while turning it on them with a dis of your own, or just setting the bar high with a dis yourself.

FREESTYLE RAP TIP #6: Subtle qualities make the difference between good and the best.

In a freestyle battle, it is not only your words that count. Your overall gestures and body language say a lot about your freestyle. Do you seem confident? Enthusiastic? Authentic? Are you cocky?

You need to pay close attention to your actions and your energy, the flow you use, your speed, the pauses your make, ect.. These are the first things you need to master and manipulate over the audience.

Sometimes an action as simple as touching your opponent is enough to radiate more boldness than the actual lyrics.

And remember, you are performing, not reading a piece of written material. Get into your words and the flow, and pay attention to yourself, your opponent, your surroundings and the audience.

OTHER THOUGHTS:

If you are trying to improve your freestyling in general, stick to the first two stages and practice them.

If you are just starting, don’t expect to be a pro off the bat. Just practice little lines and rhyming, don’t worry about it making too much sense. Once you learn flow and how to rhyme, you can start tying in sense.

And one of the most important things to remember is that you don’t have to use exact rhyming words. Use assonance to make the words sound closer together. You can manipulate the flow and the way words are said and sound to make them fit together. This is a common technique and is not frowned upon.
